Who is This?

Peter: I have always been fascinated by the 'Song of Songs' in the Old Testament because it acknowledges the wonder of romantic love as a gift from God. Allegorically, it has been seen as an expression of the love between Jesus and His church.

If the allegorical interpretation is true, then 'The Song of Songs' provides for Christian songwriters the inspiration to aim for lyrical beauty and passionate expressions of love for Jesus. In this song, I have attempted to do this by using rhyme to give the song a poetic quality, and images from the 'Song of Songs' to communicate Jesus' beauty and the depth of His love for us. The use of triple time gives the song an easy, dance-like rhythm that is appropriate to expressions of love between those who trust each other.

I Need You

Peter: Poetry is important to me and during my twenties I wrote a lot of poems, many of which found their way into various poetry magazines. Rhyme is one of the most attractive and yet demanding language techniques to deploy. Many modern pop and rock songs remain true to the poetic tradition of rhyme. In the song, 'I Need You', I chose to rhyme as a way of honouring God. I wanted to give to Him the very best I was capable of writing lyrically. The inspiration for the use of natural images came from my daily walks to work across a bridge that spans a river.

Great Lion of Judah

Peter: The first songs I ever sung in God's praise were hymns. My favourite hymns are 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' and 'Make Me a Channel of Your Peace'. It was therefore a natural desire on my part to try to write a hymn. I chose to use the glorious images of Christ as presented in the Book of Revelation as the basis of the hymn's verses. The chorus expresses our affection for the One who is so majestic and yet who loves us immeasurably. When using this song in worship, it is advisable to choose three of the verses to sing rather than trying to use all of them!

I Lift Up My Hands

Hasina: This is the title track of the album Peter and I recorded in August 2003. When I wrote this song, I wanted to enable people to express in a very joyful way their praise of God. The raising of the hands is a gesture that is symbolic of praise, surrender and supplication to God. I wanted to convey in this song that when we cry to God, He hears us and responds as a Father.

Woman of Destiny

Hasina: When I was a worship leader for a ministry organisation here in Britain, the founder of the women's branch of that ministry asked me to write a song that would capture the message about womanhood she preached. This song is the result of that invitation.

Victory

Peter: Praise and worship is a powerful weapon to use against our spiritual enemies. The warrior King of Israel, David, was a master psalmist and a maestro on the strings. When tempted to be discouraged, I sing God's praise and the discouragement lifts. As a way of acknowledging this, I wrote this song to reflect that because we are in a war, God trains us to fight and gives us the victory.

To My Lord

Hasina: This song was born out of a time of long and painful waiting on God for an answer to prayer. In an age of instant results, waiting on God's timing is a testing discipline of the heart and spirit. However, God's timing is perfect and it is often in hindsight that we realise how wise we were to have waited. (And yes, God did answer my prayer!)

Spirit Come

Peter: I often realise how sinful I am and how often I fail to obey God. This song is a prayer for His Spirit, who is the power to live as Jesus did, to help me do exactly that. To become like Jesus is the Father's desire for us all. The measure of our success in this life is not our salary or our possessions, but how Christ-like we were.
